Stepping Stones Project

Our beautiful Meeting House was built in 1894, specifically for Quaker worship. With its high windows, wooden floors and sense of light and space, it is a place that has been very dear to us for a long time. However, as Quakers we believe that worship may be conducted anywhere, and that we can encounter God wherever we meet together.

Recently, because of the rising costs of maintenance, the general impracticality of continuing to use the building as it is, and not least our sense that the space could be better used for the benefit of our whole community, we initiated a project to transform the building into a place that would give homes to those in need as well as provide a place for Meeting.

The Stepping Stones Project, as it's known, aims to provide "move-on" accommodation for young homeless people - a group who are sorely in need, particularly in Tunbridge Wells.

Like all big projects, Stepping Stones has had its fair share of frustrations and delays, and while we hoped to move back into the Meeting House (along with some new co-tenants) by 2015, that clearly hasn't happened, and for the moment we continue to meet at the Pagoda Centre. However, the project is progressing, slowly but surely!

In the meantime, we are really grateful to our neighbours in Grosvenor Road, who have been really patient throughout what must be a frustrating time for them as well.
